Methodology
This page holds 81 statistics from 20 source pages. 79 come from the organisation that produced the number (97.5%) and 2 are cited as reported because the original is not public. The oldest source is dated 19 November 2014 and the newest 14 October 2026. Every source was read on 14 October 2026.
Each statistic was traced to the organisation that produced it: a government or regulator (TRAI, MoSPI and the Sample Registration System, NFHS by IIPS and the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Law Commission of India), a company filing (Matrimony.com Ltd and Info Edge filings with the NSE and BSE and their own investor pages) or original research (Pew Research Center, NCAER). A company’s own website counts as its own published claim and is labelled as such.
A news report is used only where the original is not public or is gated: those rows are marked secondary and say who reported the figure. Nothing is taken from another statistics round-up.
Every source page was opened on 14 October 2026 and the number confirmed on it. A script re-fetches every source and checks the number is still there; sources that block automated requests are noted rather than passed silently.
Figures are quoted as the source states them, including its period and definitions. Where two sources give different estimates of the same thing, both are shown with their publisher.
