A community with deep roots
For Khatri families
The Khatri are a community originating in the Punjab region of the northwestern subcontinent, whose very name derives from the Sanskrit Kshatriya. That heritage runs through the community’s history. Khatris were prominent for centuries in trade, administration, and record-keeping across North India, serving as scribes and merchants in the Mughal period and helping run the courts and counting-houses of the day. It is a community whose story is closely tied to letters and to public life.
The community’s place in the region’s history is deep in another way too. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born in 1469 into a Khatri family at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib, and all ten of the Sikh Gurus were of Khatri lineage. For a Khatri family, an alliance is often about continuity with this long inheritance, and about finding another family that understands it.
One community, many families
Sub-groups and als
Khatri is not a single undifferentiated group, and good matchmaking begins by respecting that. The community includes broad sub-divisions such as the Bahri, Bunjahi, Sarin, and Khukhrain. The Khukhrain, for instance, is traditionally made up of a set of clans, or als, including Anand, Bhasin, Chandhok, Kohli, Sabharwal, Sahni, Sethi, and Suri. Common Khatri surnames span Kapoor, Khanna, Malhotra, Mehra, Chopra, Sahni, Seth, Kohli, and Tandon, among many others, each attached to its own family history and al.
These divisions are matters of identity and family history, not rank, and we treat them that way. No family is above or below another on this page or in our work. What they do shape is the brief. Some families wish to match within a particular sub-group or set of als. Others are open across the whole community and care most about the person and the family. Our job is to understand exactly where your family sits and to make introductions that fit it.
The rules a family keeps
Gotra and custom
Like many North Indian Hindu communities, Khatris traditionally practise gotra exogamy, avoiding marriage within the same gotra, and families often extend a similar care to the al so that an alliance does not fall within lines considered too close. In practice a family checks an introduction against gotra and al itself before it goes further, and a family that observes these rules closely will not consider a match that breaks them.
Gotra, al and family custom shape which alliances a family will consider, and families weigh them for themselves. Some families follow the rules strictly; others are more relaxed and care most about values and background. Evara matches on community, not on gotra or al, so those lines stay with your family while we focus the search on community, city and what a household actually asks for.
Distinct, and part of a wider world
Khatri identity in its own right
Khatri families sit within the broader Punjabi world, sharing much of its language, food, and festival calendar, and yet the community holds a distinct identity of its own, with its own sub-groups, als, and sense of history. Many families think of themselves first as Khatri and look to match within the community, whether that family is Hindu or Sikh, in Delhi, in the Punjab, or settled abroad.
Because Khatris are found across Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and the rest of North India, and among the wider Punjabi diaspora, a match today often spans cities and countries. A family in Delhi looking for a match settled abroad, or a family in London or Toronto looking to marry back into the community, is a common search here. We handle introductions video-first so both families can meet properly before anyone travels, while keeping the specific considerations of Khatri identity at the centre of the search.
From the first call to the first meeting
How it works for a Khatri family
A Khatri surname often does half the introducing. A name such as Khanna, Sethi or Sahni tells another Khatri household something before a word is exchanged, and many families want to know the other side’s al and where its elders came from before they look at a photograph. So the first call records what your family would say about itself at a wedding: the surname and al, whether the household is Hindu, Sikh or has both in its generations, where the family is settled now, and who at home makes the decision. Evara keeps no ranking of sub-groups or als. What you tell us goes into the brief in your family’s own words.
Many Khatri families in Delhi trace their elders to towns in West Punjab, such as Lahore, Rawalpindi or Multan, that became part of Pakistan in 1947, and some still ask where the other family lived before Partition. Tell us whether that matters to you. If it does, it goes into the brief. If it does not, we leave it out, and in either case it is never a judgement about a family.
After the call your profile is completed and verified, and only then does membership begin, free of charge. On membership, matches are chosen for you and a small set arrives each day. Nobody is assigned to your family, so the judgement on gotra, al and religion is made at home, one profile at a time. On Select or Reserve a named matchmaker holds the brief instead, gives you the reasoning for each Khatri family put forward, and is with you at family meetings in Delhi NCR, and on video call across India.

How far to look
Families answer the question of how widely to look in a few ways, and each is a fair answer. Some want a Khatri household and nothing else, sometimes a Hindu Khatri or a Sikh Khatri household in particular. Some are comfortable with Khatri and Arora families, two related but distinct Punjabi communities that some families marry between readily and others do not. A few will look further, to a Marwari family or another North Indian household, where values and customs sit well together. We ask which answer is yours, write it into the brief in your words, and do not widen it without asking you first.
The answer can differ inside one house. A grandfather may want the al lines the family has always kept; a daughter working in Gurgaon or London may care more about whether the other person will move, and less about the sub-group. We record both views, tell you plainly where they differ, and ask the family to decide which one the search follows. Evara will not settle that question for you, and it will not search on one view while telling the other what it wants to hear.

Lifetime membership is a single one-time payment with no renewals. No. Evara does not verify sub-group, al or gotra, and keeps no list or ranking of them. What a family tells us is recorded as it is told, and families confirm these lines with each other directly, as they always have. What is verified is the profile itself, before membership begins.
Our family came to Delhi from West Punjab in 1947. Can that be part of the search?
Yes, if you want it to be. Tell us at the first call and it goes into your brief, where a matchmaker on Select or Reserve weighs it alongside community, city and religion. On membership the matches are chosen for you by the system, so a question like this is one you raise with the other family yourselves.
Will relatives and people in our community see our profile?
A surname can identify a family to others in the same community, so the short version of the profile matters here: it shows your first name, age, city, religion and community, and keeps your photographs and the rest of your details back until both sides have shown interest. A family you know is shown your profile only if Evara matches the two of you, and it is not shown to the public or to search engines.
