Gujarat sits on the western coast of India and had a population of about 60 million at the 2011 Census, spread across regions that feel quite distinct from one another. A family in the Kathiawar towns of Saurashtra, a family in Kutch near the great salt marsh, a family in Ahmedabad’s heritage-city lanes, and a family in the diamond and textile trades of Surat share a language and a state, yet their relatives, customs, and expectations can differ. The regions

Saurashtra, the Kathiawar peninsula in the west, holds cities such as Rajkot, Junagadh at the foot of Girnar, Jamnagar, and Bhavnagar, along with the pilgrimage centres of Somnath and Dwarka on the coast and the Gir forest, the last home of the Asiatic lion. To its north lies Kutch, the largest district in India by area, ringed by the Rann of Kutch salt marsh and home to its own Kutchi language and long-settled communities.

Central Gujarat centres on Ahmedabad, the largest city, whose historic walled city became a UNESCO World Heritage City in 2017, the first in India, and on Vadodara, the former capital of the Gaekwad princely state, along with Anand and Nadiad in the Charotar belt. South Gujarat runs down the coast through Surat, one of the world’s largest diamond-cutting centres and a major textile hub, and on to Navsari and Valsad. North Gujarat, around Mehsana, Patan, and Banaskantha, completes the state. Each region carries its own dialect, festivals, and marriage customs, and a match that respects them tends to settle well.

Communities

Gujarati families carry community identities that are matters of history and belonging, not of rank. The Patidar or Patel community, including its Leva and Kadva groups, is spread across central and north Gujarat and Saurashtra. The Vania and Lohana communities, the many Jain families, and Brahmin communities such as the Nagar, Audichya, and Modh each hold their own traditions, and the Kutchi community has its own distinct customs and language. For many families sub-community, gotra, and family lineage matter in a match, and those are their own to weigh, never a measure of worth. No family is above or below another.

Gujarat is also known for a large tradition of vegetarianism, and many households prefer a match who shares that. We begin with a one-on-one profiling conversation rather than a form, and we learn your family’s community and sub-community, your region, dietary and lifestyle preferences, whether you are open to a match settled abroad, and the intangibles that decide compatibility for you. A family that wants a match within Ahmedabad has a different brief from one open to the whole of Gujarat, or to Gujarati families in London, New Jersey, or Nairobi, and we plan for that from the start.

From there membership matches are chosen around your preferences and arrive each day, and on Select or Reserve a dedicated matchmaker presents a small number of introductions, each with our reasoning for why this specific family could suit yours. Because good matches often cross a regional line or a border, we start with video introductions and arrange travel only once both families are genuinely interested, planning around time zones, festivals such as Navratri, and trips to India.
