Astrology for Marriage Matching: How Kundali Helps Assess Compatibility

Two families sit down with a horoscope in hand, and within minutes a number is announced.

Couple face each other in a sunlit sandstone temple, she in a cream saree, he in a white kurta.

For millions of families that number still carries real weight. Long before dating apps and compatibility quizzes, Vedic astrology built a detailed system for checking whether two people are likely to build a stable life together.

In fourteen years of matchmaking we have watched hundreds of families use that number well, and some use it badly. The families who use it well treat it as the beginning of a conversation. The families who use it badly let a number they do not fully understand close a door on somebody they had not yet met.

This is what the system actually measures, what the score means, which doshas matter, and what to do when the number comes back lower than you hoped.

What is kundli matching for marriage

Kundli matching, also called kundali milan or horoscope matching, is the Vedic practice of comparing two birth charts to assess marriage compatibility. It reads planetary positions, Moon signs and birth stars, the nakshatras, for both people.

Where the practice comes from

This is not a modern trend. Kundli matching has guided marriage decisions for centuries and is rooted in classical Vedic texts. The idea underneath it is straightforward: your Moon position at birth is said to reflect your emotional nature, and comparing two Moon positions is said to reveal how naturally two temperaments might sit together.

  • It compares birth charts using exact date, time and place of birth
  • It centres on the Moon nakshatra, not the Sun sign most people know
  • It produces a numeric score, plus separate dosha checks that sit outside that score
  • It is still practised widely across South Asian marriage traditions

The numeric score is what most families look at first, so it is worth understanding exactly what it counts.

How the 36 point Guna Milan system works

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot matching, compares eight compatibility factors, the kootas, between two horoscopes and scores them out of 36. A combined score of 18 or above is traditionally considered favourable.

The eight kootas

Each koota measures a different layer, from temperament to health. They are not weighted equally, and that matters more than most families realise. Nadi alone carries 8 of the 36 points, so a single low koota can pull a total down sharply while everything else sits high.

KootaPointsWhat it is said to measure
Varna1Spiritual temperament and ego compatibility
Vashya2Natural balance of influence between partners
Tara3General well-being and health alignment
Yoni4Physical compatibility
Graha Maitri5Mental and intellectual compatibility
Gana6Basic nature, whether calm, active or restless
Bhakoot7Emotional bonding and financial harmony
Nadi8Health, vitality and compatibility for children

A higher total generally points to smoother compatibility. But which kootas scored low almost always matters more than the total itself, and that is the part a plain number hides.

What counts as a good score

Eighteen out of 36 is the classical minimum for a marriage to proceed. Scores between 24 and 32 are read as strong. Anything close to 36 is rare, and astrologers are the first to say it guarantees nothing on its own.

Guna scoreHow it is readWhat families usually do
Below 18WeakAstrologers often suggest caution or remedies
18 to 23AcceptableWorkable, worth reading the individual kootas
24 to 32Good to excellentStrong alignment across most factors
33 to 36RareExceptional, still read alongside the doshas

The score is a starting point for a discussion, not a verdict. The doshas below often carry more practical weight in how a family actually decides.

What Mangal Dosha means

Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha, occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. Traditional practice holds that it can create friction inside a marriage if it is not addressed.

How astrologers actually handle it

A Mangal Dosha in one chart does not rule out a match. Traditional practice looks for the same dosha in the other chart, because it is believed to cancel when both partners carry it.

  • It is checked separately from the 36 point score, not inside it
  • Astrologers estimate it appears in roughly a third of horoscopes
  • It can often be balanced when both partners share it
  • Remedies are usually suggested rather than the match being refused

Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha are read the same way. They are flags to discuss, not automatic rejections.

How the families in our own register record manglik status, as each family gives it, is set out in The Evara Families Report 2026.

What families actually do when the score is low

This is the question families ask us most, and the article you usually find online does not answer it.

A low total is rarely the end. What experienced astrologers look at next is which kootas produced it. A 16 that comes from a low Varna and a low Vashya reads very differently from a 16 that comes from Nadi alone, because Nadi carries eight points and a single Nadi mismatch can drag a total below the line while every other factor is strong.

What we see in practice:

  • Families who ask for a second reading, from an astrologer who explains the kootas rather than only announcing the total
  • Families who go ahead with a lower score after understanding which factor caused it
  • Families who decide the tradition matters more than any single match, which is a legitimate choice and one nobody should apologise for
  • And, sometimes, families who decline somebody they never met on a number they were never shown the workings of

The question worth asking is not what did we score. It is which factor scored low, and what does that specifically mean.

Can kundli matching predict a successful marriage

No astrologer and no platform can promise an outcome for a real relationship, and anyone who does is selling something.

What kundli matching offers is a structured way to compare temperament, health and emotional alignment before two people know each other well. It works best as one input among several. Most experienced astrologers say the same thing: the score shows what is worth discussing, and communication, values and shared goals decide how a marriage actually goes.

Families increasingly treat it as tradition and as a conversation starter, alongside getting to know somebody rather than instead of it.

How to get an accurate report

An accurate report needs precise birth details, the exact date, time and place, for both people. Even a few minutes of difference can shift the nakshatra and change the koota results, which is why a birth time recorded loosely decades ago is worth confirming before anybody reads anything into the output.

Cross-check a serious result with an experienced astrologer rather than relying on an automated score alone, particularly when Nadi or Mangal appear. A short consultation can explain what a specific low koota actually means for your situation, which a generated report cannot.

Where Evara stands on horoscopes

We should be plain about this, because families ask.

What we do is respect that this matters to many families: members can ask for a kundali check as part of their own decision, and our matchmakers are used to families for whom this is not negotiable. Many Brahmin families place kundali matching early in the search, and our page on Brahmin matrimony and matchmaking in Delhi explains how we work with that.

We have seen enough matches to hold two things at once. The tradition is real and deserves respect. And a number, read without its workings, has closed doors that should have stayed open.

If you are considering a match, speak to our team about how families usually work this through, or see how our matchmaking works if you would rather somebody experienced handled the search with you.

Bringing tradition and judgement together

Kundli matching gives families a structured, time-tested way to talk about compatibility before a marriage. It works best as guidance rather than as a verdict. Understand the score and the doshas clearly, then weigh them alongside real conversations about values, expectations and what both people want from a life together.

If you are preparing for a match, start by confirming accurate birth details for both people, and have the report read by somebody who will explain what the numbers mean for your specific situation rather than only announcing the total.

Frequently asked questions

Is kundli matching scientifically proven?
No. It is a traditional astrological practice and not a scientifically validated method. Many families still value it as part of marriage tradition and as a structured way to discuss compatibility.
What is a good kundli matching score?
Traditionally 18 out of 36 is the minimum considered favourable, and 24 to 32 is read as strong. Scores are always read alongside the dosha checks rather than on their own.
Does Mangal Dosha mean the marriage will fail?
No. It is a factor to review and sometimes address with remedies, not a prediction of failure, and traditional practice holds that it balances when both partners carry it.
Can two people marry with a low Guna Milan score?
Yes, and many do. Astrologers look at which kootas are weak, because a low total caused by one heavily weighted factor reads very differently from a low total across the board.
More questions
Do I need the exact birth time?
Yes. Nakshatra and koota calculations depend on it, because birth time sets the Moon position directly. A difference of a few minutes can change the final score.
What if our families disagree about how much the score matters?
This is common and it is worth naming early rather than late. In our experience the conversation goes better when both families understand what the score actually measured, rather than arguing about a number neither side has seen the workings of.
